U Khun Htun Oo, a veteran politician and founder of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), died on April 30 at around 1 p.m. at his house, 9 miles from Yangon, SNLD spokesperson U Sai Leik told the Than Lwin Times.
U Khun Htun Oo, a veteran Shan politician and leader, died suddenly of cerebral hemorrhage.
U Sai Leik described the death of former party leader U Khun Htun Oo as a “great loss.”
According to senior politician U Khun Htun Oo’s leadership, U Sai Leik claimed he will continue to struggle for national liberation and self-determination.
U Khun Htun Oo, a veteran politician, has served as chairman of the SNLD for more than 30 years for Shan people, and he was not allowed to resign from the party, so he announced his resignation from the newspaper.
In the 1990 election, he was elected to the SNLD in Hsipaw Township.
For his political actions under the junta’s control, U Khun Htun Oo was sentenced to 93 years in jail, but was released after serving six years at Putao Prison.
U Khun Htun Oo is the grandson of Sao Kya Seng, the last Saopha of Hsipaw, and he was 79 years old at the time of his death.
