Mawlamyine, May (28)

As more soldiers joined the non-violent civil disobedience movement (CDM), the military council imposed more restrictions within the army, said the CDM community.

After Thingyan, more people deserted the army and joined CDM.

Currently, the military council has started to control the rate of desertion and CDM by confiscating national registration cards and household lists of soldiers, and restricting them from leaving the compound of military housing, said an observer.

He further said that the military council does not pay salaries to some soldiers and oppresses and restricts family members in numerous ways. However, more and more soldiers are contacting revolutionary groups to join the CDM.

Currently, deserters from the military council are being accepted by revolutionary groups such as People’s Goal, People’s Embrace, Good People, and Mother’s Embrace.

Within a month after Thingyan, there were at least 12 people who joined the Mother’s Embrace group and took refuge as deserters, and some are taking refuge in liberated areas.

“The air force, which has carried out mass killings of people, is currently the least cooperative group to join CDM, said Air Force CDM Sergeant Htet Naing Aung. Our air force has three sections: administrative, technical, and flying. Most of the people who join CDM are from the administrative sector.

Soldiers suffer fatalities every day as a result of daily clashes and attacks by urban guerilla groups, and there are even soldiers fleeing without anyone knowing.

The National Unity Government (NUG) has announced that those who left the military council and joined the CDM will be given a worthy reward and that the number of soldiers and police CDMs who have joined the people over the past two years of the coup has reached around 20,000.

However, the NUG said that since some CDM soldiers returned to the army, they are carefully checking for deserters later, and it has not yet said exactly how long the door of the CDM will be open.
