The military council arrested nine residents and sealed off a flower nursery in Mawlamyine, Mon State, for staging floral strike to mark public leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday, locals told Than Lwin Times.
On the morning of June 19, there were a lot of people buying flowers at Orchid Princess Nursery in Mawlamyine’s Shwe Myain Thiri Ward, and the seller gave them away for free, said the sources.
Acting on a tip-off from an informant, the regime troops arrived at the flower nursery and arrested the flower buyers, including the owner, accusing them of staging flower strike to commemorate Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday.
The regime troops took the detainees to the Zeyarthiri police station, and among them, eight people were forced to sign pledges and released, the sources close to the family members of the detainees.
The owner of the flower nursery was still held in custody at the Zeyarthiri police station, and the military council posted a notice on the door of the shop that it was temporarily closed.
A resident denounced the military council’s act as an attempt to instill fear and oppress the people and claimed that freedom of expression and movement had vanished under the military junta.
The pro-democracy activists staged flower strike across the country to mark the 78th birthday of public leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, which falls on June 19.
Junta supporters called for the arrest of those who participated in the non-violent flower strike and revealed the names of those who wished Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on her birthday.
Nearly 60 people were arrested by the military council for participating in the nationwide flower strike, and some of those face charges.
