Seven military officers, including Major General Ko Ko Maung, Commander of the Northern Command based in Myitkyina, Kachin State, have been under arrest, and the assets of the wives of other military officials are also being scrutinized, sources close to military regime told Than Lwin Times.
The officers, including the commander and deputy commander of the Northern Command, were arrested on July 13 by order of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services and transported from Myitkyina to Nay Pyi Taw.
The military council is also detaining the wives of acommander and military officers and is checking details of their assets, purchases of diamonds and gold, and the shops from which they were bought, the source said.
Among those arrested and interrogated are at least seven officers including Commander and Deputy Commander of Northern Command, and colonels. The headquarters of Northern Command is also confiscating the phones of majors and captains, and conducting inspections.
Those close to the military council said that the arrest of the military council was related to bribery cases between businessmen and military officials, and cases of illegal importation of ammunition for jade blocks, but those close to the military council could not confirm this separately.
Having arrested some military officers, including the Commander of Northern Command, security in Myitkyina town was tightened, and the military council was conducting inspections even in unexpected places, according to local residents.
Before the coup, Major General Ko Ko Maung served as the Commander of Southeastern Command, and was then transferred to Northern Command.
Major General Ko Ko Maung is one of the main military officials responsible for the aerial bombardment that killed dozens of people at a concert to mark the 62nd anniversary of the Kachin Liberation Organization (KIO) in Anampa village.
