Thai products now cost more in Mon State as a result of the strengthening of the Thai baht and transportation issues, the traders told Than Lwin Times.

The exchange rate of one Thai baht was around 80 kyats in the first week of January, and it rose to around 86 kyats in the second week.

The cost of products imported from Thailand has increased by 1,000 kyats to 3,000 kyats, depending on the type of item.

The further increase in the price of Thai goods is due to a decline in the value of the Myanmar currency, not an increase in the price of goods in Thailand. According to a trader, the exchange rate can only be stabilized if Myanmar’s monetary policy is specific.

Currently, there are delays and other difficulties in importing Thai goods due to the fighting, which has led to high transportation costs and an increase in product prices.

Therefore, in order to reduce the price of Thai products, the military council needs to strengthen the value of Myanmar’s currency, otherwise, the price of products may continue to rise, the traders said.

Basic foods, medicines, cosmetics, consumer goods, construction materials, and general commodities are regularly imported into Mon State through the Thai border town of Myawaddy.

The exchange rate of Thai baht was just over 30 kyats under NLD government, but it has more than doubled since the military coup.
