Yangon, February (4)
According to ISP-Myanmar data, there were only 2.3 million students enrolled in the 2020-2021 academic year, compared to more than 9.2 million students in 2019-2020 academic year.
Following that, only about 5.6 million students went back to school, and the education sector suffered many setbacks, with school enrollment dropping significantly, according to ISP-Myanmar.
ISP-Myanmar estimates that there may be 12 million students enrolled in schools annually depending on population growth, meaning that at least 8 million to 10 million students may have lost their access to an education during the three years of the coup.
Additionally, the military council suspended more than 125,000 teachers who joined the Civil Disobedient Movement (CDM) out of the 430,000 total teachers.
The list of students and teachers from basic to higher education collected by ISP-Myanmar refers to the statement of the military council.
ISP-Myanmar said that in the statement of the Ministry of Education of the Military Council on November 30 last year, there were more than 7.23 million students in the 2022-2023 academic year.
The Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP) reported on February 1 that 377 children are still being held in detention and that 286 have died in the two years since the military coup.
