On March 24, the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) announced that those who illegally use electricity will face prosecution under the Electricity Law.
According to the YESC statement, the income of the state’s electricity sector is decreasing because some people are stealing electricity.
According to YESC’s statement, electricity consumers steal electricity by directly connecting without a meter, rigging the meter unit without having a meter, connecting through other power lines, and using electricity from general household meters for businesses.
The YESC has said that it will conduct a field inspection with the relevant township groups due to problems such as power outages, voltage drops, the burning of transformers, electrocution, fire hazards, and reduced income from the electricity sector due to illegal users of electricity.
If the people stealing electricity are found, both the users and the conspirators will have their electricity cut off, and they will have to pay the electricity bill according to the amount consumed.
The YESC has warned that if the people are found guilty, they will be fined and imprisoned for five to ten years.
A citizen of Yangon told Than Lwin Times that because the military council did not provide sufficient power, their daily lives are becoming more difficult and they are unable to conduct business as usual.
“My garment factory, which employs five tailors, is unable to complete orders on time due to the power outages. We use ordinary sewing machines instead of motorized machines, and the clothes are not finished in time,” said a housewife from Thakaeta Township, Yangon.
People in Yangon are having trouble with their daily lives because they only get electricity once every four hours, from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The Junta’s Ministry of Electricity, which distributes electricity throughout the country on a rotating system, announced that starting March 23, electricity will be distributed only on a rotating system for 8 hours every other day in Nay Pyi Taw.
