The military council gave 200,000 kyats to the family of a Mon woman who died after being hit by a heavy weapon in Kyauk Ai village (Wintamaw in Mon), Khawza town of Mon state, locals told Than Lwin Times.
On the evening of June 16, five large weapons fired by the Khoza-based Infantry Battalion 31 landed in Wintamaw village and exploded, killing 35-year-old Mi Htwe Htwe Kyi.
The regime troops arrived at Mi Htwe Htwe Kyi’s house that day and claimed that they were not responsible for the attack.
On June 18, the military council army arrived again and gave cash donations of 200,000 kyats forcibly to Mi Htwe Htwe Kyi, a local said.
Local residents confirmed to Than Lwin Times that the troops who fired heavy weapons into Wintamaw village were members of the military regime.
Concerning the deceased Mon woman, no Mon political parties, including the New Mon State Party, had sent a letter of condemnation to the military council or issued a statement.
Ye Township of Mon State is part of the area under the control of the New Mon State Party, and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) are active in the area.
However, since the military coup, battalions, military outposts, and departmental offices in Ye Township have been targeted frequently, and the town was placed under martial law on February 2.
