As of June 30, the military council has yet to repair the Kyoneik Bridge, which had been damaged after being attacked, between Belin and Thaton Townships in Mon State, said the locals.
When the bridge was detonated early on June 29, two police officers who had imported an unlicensed car suffered injuries, and one lawyer from Thaton Township was killed.
The authorities have only placed caution signs on the site of the collapsed bridge, and since repairs have not yet been made, vehicles are only passing through the undamaged lane of the bridge one at a time.
The allied defense forces launched a second attack on the junta soldiers, police, and departmental officials, including Colonel Aung Aung Hein, the commander of Thaton Township, who came to investigate the explosion of the bridge, killing the head of the district road department and administrative clerk, and injuring 26 others.
The inspection team did not come to repair the bridge because they were afraid of being attacked again, said a local.
Kyoneik Bridge is an essential roadway on the Yangon-Mawlamyine route, and the flow of goods and travelers is currently hampered.
The detonation of the Kyoneik Bridge on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway was aimed at cutting off the supply route of the military council, said the chairman of KNU’s Allied Oversight Committee.
Military analysts believe that this incident could intensify the fighting in Mon State’s Thaton District.
