A couple stepped on a landmine in pomelo farm near Ingabo village in Mon State’s Kyaikto Township, killing the husband, said locals.
On December 28, 40-year-old U Naing Win and his wife Daw Mi Mi from Ingabo village were hit by a landmine while they were going to cut wood at the Pomelo farm.
U Naing Win suffered lacerations on his limbs and abdomen, and Daw Mi Mi suffered landmine injuries on her left hip, abdomen, and arms.
People close to the family said that U Naing Win died while being transported to the Thaton District Public Hospital with the help of a social rescue group, and that his wife was rushed to Yangon Hospital.
Ingabo village is an area under the control of KNU Brigade-1 Thaton-District, and regime troops are frequently targeted with landmines; thus, the junta set up an ambush there.
Ko Aye Min Tun, an official from Thaton-PDF, told the Than Lwin Times that the landmines were planted by the regime troops, who warned locals not to pass through those areas.
On November 7, a man stepped on a land mine and was seriously injured while going to tap a rubber tree at the Shwephyu rubber farm belonging to the Prison Department in Thit Seik Pin village, Kyaikto Township.
According to the December report of the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor (LCMM), at least 200 people have been killed by landmines and explosive remnants of war in Myanmar this year.
