Military council removed some ministers, including the defense minister, and announced the formation of a new cabinet after it extended the state of emergency on 3 August.
In the newly-established military council, Defense Minister General Mya Tun Oo was reappointed as Minister of Transport and Communications, and the former Minister, General Tin Aung San, was appointed as Defense Minister.
Chairman of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) Lt. Gen. Yar Pyae, was appointed as the Minister of Home Affairs, and former Minister Lt. Gen. Soe Htut as the Minister of the Ministry of Union Government Office-1.
Daw Thet Thet Khaing, Chairman of the People’s Pioneer Party, who suffered defeat in the last general election but became Minister of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement after the coup, has been appointed as Minister of Hotels and Tourism.
According to U Nay Phone Latt, the spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office of NUG, the reshuffle and purge show a rift among military leadership.
The junta said that it reshuffled the cabinet according to Section 419 of the Constitution, aiming to further expedite the implementation of the Five-Point Roadmap and 12 Objectives.
U Pe Than, a veteran politician, stated that the military council must engage in military activities in order to fulfill the roadmap and objectives, and that the issue may be handled simply by reshuffling the leadership.
Political observers and revolutionary forces noted that the military council will not be able to stabilize and control the country until the current state of emergency expires at the end of January next year.
On August 2, the military council replaced some members of the council and removed some senior officials, including union ministers, from their positions for health reasons.
The military leaders, Sr. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and Deputy Sr. Gen. Soe Win, will remain in their former posts in the newly-formed military council and cabinet.
