Palaw, 18 October
Junta navy banned the sale of rice in Kyaukkar village, Palaw Township, Tanintharyi Region, according to locals.
Since October 12, the military council has issued a verbal order that shops in the village are not permitted to sell rice and must instead purchase it from local administrative bodies that they have suggested.
Residents say that the military council has ordered that those selling rice secretly will be fined as well as imprisoned.
Locals are worried about the long-term shortage of rice due to the restrictions of the junta navy, and the price of rice per Pyi is almost 1,000 kyats higher than the market price.
Kyaukka village is a small island home to over a thousand people, the majority of whom work in aquatic businesses.
Three navy warships always docked near Kyaukka Village in Palaw Township, and the troops frequently inspected the village.
