Yangon, 25 January
Yangon City Development Committee immediately suspended water supply without prior notice in some townships, and that residences in Pabedan, Botahtaung, Kyauktada, Mayangon, Yankin, Bahan, Tamwe, Pazuntaung and Mingalartaungnyunt suffered the lack of household water for some days. These areas are the business hubs with high population density and many high-rises.
“We did not get a prior notice for the suspension of water supply which started on 21 January morning. When we contacted to the municipal authorities, they replied the water supply will resume in two days later after repairing distribution pipelines from Hlawgar reservoir. However, it has not recovered yet. We could not store water in advance as we did not get earlier notice. Actually, we cannot store much water in the apartment. Although we can manage water shortage for one day, it has been three days we are facing many problems. We know the rotating outrage of electrical blackout in the city areas,” said a residence in Botahtaung Township.
Water is being sold on handcarts on the streets of these areas, each tank of water cost K4,000 plus service charges for bringing to upper floors of the apartments.
Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation announced the collapse of Biluchaung (2)-Tikyit Double Power Cables in 21 January night, and the power blackout in some areas of Yangon. Residences in Yangon worry about many problems from the lack of water supply and electricity.
Yangon City Development Committee did not issue announcement on the recent shortage of water supply.
