As the junta army has conducted military operations and made restrictions in Nyaunglaybin District controlled by KNU Brigade-3, it was difficult to provide food and medicine to the displaced people, the Karen social organizations told Than Lwin Times.
The junta armed forces have been conducting military operations in Kyaukgyi and Mone Townships, Nyaung Lay Pin District, since June 26, when clashes broke out between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Brigade 3 and military troops advancing through the villages, forcing the local people to flee under heavy artillery fire.
The number of displaced people in Kyaukgyi and Mone Townships has risen to around 130,000, most of them are women, children and the elderly, and the refugees are currently facing food and health issues.
A member of the Karen civil society group in Nyaunglaybin District said it is finding it difficult to send aid to refugees who are facing food and health problems due to the military junta’s deployment and poor transportation.
The KNU claimed that on July 4, the junta beat a Karen social worker who was helping displaced persons in KNU-Mong Township to death and stole his money.
In addition, the military council has instructed the commuters near Shwekyinchaung, Kadatchaung and Madamachaung villages in Shwe Kyin Township of KNU’s Nyaunglaybin District, to have recommendation letters for food transportations and their trips, and said they will confiscate the goods and take military action if the order is violated.
