The Karen National Union (KNU) claims that the Military Council’s targeted use of heavy weaponry and airstrikes in KNU-held Kawthoolei territory resulted in more than 200 injuries and about 130 fatalities among civilians.

In the 20 months from January 2021 to August this year, the Military Council Army and the Border Guard Force BGF fired more than 4,000 mortar shells into villages and local businesses, conducting 117 airstrikes.

As a result of this attack, 131 innocent people were killed and 294 were injured. While there are 412 people who were arrested and threatened and used as human shields, the statement said.

According to KNU, more than 370,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and flee to safe areas due to mortar shells and airstrikes.

Among the IDPs are children, students, disabled people, and the elderly, and they are also in need of humanitarian assistance, the KNU said.

In the past 20 months, there have been over 6,000 clashes between KNU allied troops and the junta and its BGF joint forces in KNU-held Kawthoolei.

During these battles, 5125 people were killed and 4174 were injured on the side of the junta and the BGF, while KNLA/ KNDO lost 137 lives for the country and 352 comrades sustained injuries. 

In addition, the KNU statement stated that the KNLA/ KNDO forces were able to destroy nine major bases of the military council.
