In Mon State, the military council is preparing to celebrate the Thingyan Festival with huge crowds, but the dealers told Than Lwin Times that there is almost no sale of Thingyan accessories in the market.
Thingyan accessories such as water guns, waterproof plastic bags for phones, glasses, goggles, the same outfits, and foam spray, and other accessories, before the military took power, were in high supply and demand in the market during the Thingyan period, leading to shortages of items.
The purchase and sale of Thingyan accessories in the market have, however, declined during this year’s Thingyan, which will be celebrated following the military coup.
A seller said that he will no longer sell Thingyan items because there were no orders for them during Thingyan this year. He added, “In the past, young people used to walk around in groups and get splashed with water, so there was a high demand for shoes, hats, and waterproof bags. This year, I don’t think anyone will go around during Thingyan.
In the past, Thingyan items used to be sold in markets and stores a month before the Thingyan Festival, but this is no longer the case, and some stores only sell some items left over from the previous year.
A dealer said that Thingyan items were sold so briskly that there were no items left around this time in previous years, and now there are hardly any transactions in the market.
To draw huge crowds to the Thingyan Festival, the military council has built seven entertainment and water-throwing pavilions along Kanna Road in Mawlamyine, including the central pavilion, food donation pavilions, and a walking Thingyan.
On the other hand, the military council pressured entrepreneurs and companies to build pavilions compulsorily so that the Thingyan Festival could be crowded with people.
In Mawlamyine, the Thingyan Festival was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and after the military coup in 2021 and 2022, the people also did not take part in the Thingyan Festival.
The military council is attempting to draw large crowds to Myanmar’s New Year Thingyan Festival, and the revolutionary forces in Mon State are warning the people not to participate in this sham festival.
