Yangon, 4 May

Yangon region’s former economic minster, U Aung Than Oo, died at Insein public hospital while he was undergoing medical treatment as a prisoner, sources close to his family told to Than Lwin Times, but the cause of his death remains unknown.

While he was the junta-appointed economic minister at Yangon region government, he was arrested in June 2022 and sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for bribery cases in relation to allocation of lands.

Moreover, Yangon Region’s former Chief Minister U Hla Soe was sentenced to 15 years, and its government’s former Secretary U Soe Soe Zaw to 6 years for bribery cases.

The late economic minister was a member of military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party, and contested elections three times in Thanlyin Township of Yangon region, but he was defected by NLD’s representative in 2015 and 2010 General Election.

He was the vice-chairman of Myanmar Rice Federation before he was appointed as the economic minister.
