Mawlamyine, July (16)

Mawlamyine, the capital of Mon State, has seen a number of killings, robberies, and lootings amid tightened security over the past two years of military coup, locals told Than Lwin Times.

A man was killed near an abandoned building in Mawlamyine’s Taung Yoe Dan neighborhood on July 8, and his motorcycle, phone, and some other items were stolen.

In addition, on the night of July 10, a man was beaten and robbed of his motorcycle and phone at the rubber farm road in San Gyi neighborhood, according to local residents.

Such incidents have become more common this year, with motorbike thefts, beatings, and looting occurring on a daily basis.

A resident of Mawlamyine said, “Murders and robberies have become more common in recent times, but the military council has rarely taken action. Theft and robberies are becoming more common, partly because people are struggling with financial issues and jobs are scarce. People’s lives were even threatened in several circumstances. CCTV has been set up throughout the city, but the criminals have yet to be tracked down”.

In Mawlamyine, the military council has beefed up security at the entrances and exits of the city for security reasons, and is conducting day and night patrols, blocking the roads, and inspecting the people.

In addition, CCTVs have been installed all over Mawlamyine for the safety of the public, but the failure to arrest the perpetrators has raised questions among the public.

“In the past, there was no problem with us going out after 9 or 10 p.m. and now when I go home late from work, I worry about my safety,” said another Mawlamyain resident.

In Mawlamyine, groups of people are killing and robbing others, threatening their lives even for low-value things, and people’s lives are becoming insecure.

Those thefts and robberies are reported to the police, but no action is taken against the suspects, leaving the victims to fend for themselves.
