Regime troops burned down more than 670 local homes in Tanintharyi Region during the nine months from January to September of this year, according to an independent research group based in Tanintharyi.
According to FE3 Tanintharyi, the military council torched more than 380 houses in Palaw Township, nearly 180 in Launglon Township, more than 30 houses in Dawei, nearly 20 houses in Thayet Chaung Township, 25 houses in Yebyu Township, and nearly 30 houses in Tanintharyi Township.
Residents were accused of supporting the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs), and their homes were burned by the military council.
An official of the Tanintharyi People’s Defense Force (PDF) criticized the army’s burning of houses as an act of intimidation so that the people would not support PDFs.
The junta troops, on the other side, stormed the villages, arresting locals as human shields, burning their homes, ransacking them, and stealing valuables.
It is reported that more than 50,000 local residents were forced to flee their homes due to the military council’s invasion in September.
According to research group ISP-Myanmar’s statement on September 29, more than 86,000 homes were burned or destroyed across the country during the two-and-a-half years of the coup, most of which were in Sagaing.
