Although hundred baskets of paddy are priced at more than 1.5 million kyats in Mon state, there is no profit left for farmers due to high general costs this season, farmers told Than Lwin Times.
Farmers are also facing high prices for fuel, inputs, and labor costs during this year’s monsoon season.
However, during the rainy season, the price of coarse rice groups such as Emahta and Shwe Wah Tun is more than 1.5 million kyats per hundred baskets, making it inconvenient for farmers.
A farmer told Than Lwin Times that the destruction of some paddy fields by floods, pests and a significant drop in rice yield left them with no profit.
Farmers who grow monsoon rice this year have a production cost of at least 800,000 to 1, 000,000 kyats per acre of paddy.
However, only 40 to 60 baskets are produced per acre in Mon State, depending on the township, and the farmers say that this price will not cover the cost of production.
A farmer also said that although the price of rice is more than 1,500,000 kyats, the farmers will suffer losses due to the high general costs.
Before harvest time, the prices of rice in the coarse rice group ranged from 23 to 25 lakhs per hundred baskets, and those in the quality rice group ranged from 28 to 30 lakhs.
The Myanmar Rice Federation has set a reference price of 1.3 to 1.5 million kyats for Emahta and Nga Sein of 100 baskets, 1.6 to 1.8 million kyats for Ayeyarwaddy Paw Hsan, and 1.8 to 2 million kyats for Shwe Bo Paw Hsan.
The Myanmar Rice Federation said that rice organizations set a reasonable rice price to stabilize commodity prices.
Mon State has nearly 700,000 acres of monsoon rice, and more than 400,000 baskets of rice are produced each year, with milled rice exported to some provinces.
