Mawlamyine, 17 November

Than Lwin Times has learned that some non-CDM teachers and staff at Mawlamyine University moved elsewhere in a hurry after the revolutionary forces took over Loikaw University in Kayah State.

The junta-appointed rector of Mawlamyine University held an emergency meeting on November 15, and was instructed to tighten security inside the university campus and prevent outsiders from entering.

The meeting was held after receiving a notification that the People’s Defense Force (PDF) will attack Mawlamyine University in the coming days.

The non-CDM community said that after the meeting, some of the teachers and staff moved to the homes of their relatives and others because they didn’t want to live inside the university compound.

The president of the Mawlamyine University Students’ Union, who is participating in the Spring Revolution, Min Than Zin Oo, noted that the revolutionary forces did not threaten Mawlamyine University.

The authorities of Mawlamyine University have banned the staff from going outside and instructed them to take responsibility for their own security.

In addition, the staff are instructed to constantly monitor suspicious activities through CCTV cameras installed in various departments of the university and report to the relevant authorities as soon as possible.

The military council has announced that the examinations for distance learning students at Loikaw and Lashio Universities have been postponed following the occupation of Loikaw University.
