The political detainees and prisoners are allegedly tortured by prison authorities at Zay Mathwe Prison in Mon State’s Thaton Township, according to family members.
Political detainees and prisoners were beaten, tortured, forced to work, and threatened by jail authorities.
A family member of the detainee said that the prison staff had demanded money from the visiting relatives and intercepted the delivery of supplies and food.
Families must pay at least Ks 10,000 to prison staff for detainees to receive food and supplies, as well as hundreds of thousands of kyats to prison authorities to keep the detainees from being forced to work.
According to prison procedures, detainees are not allowed to work and the lawyers claimed that such activities amounted to unjustified torture of political detainees by prison authorities.
More than 500 people have been detained in Mon State for protesting the military regime, with 200 of them pardoned under ASEAN pressure.
