The military council has sentenced 20 local people, including members of the NLD party executive committee of Pwintbyu Township, who were arrested in Sidoktaya, Magway Region, to long-term prison terms, the Pwintbyu NLD party member told Than Lwin Times.
The military council sentenced 11 local residents, including NLD party executive member U Win Zaw Oo, to 25 years in prison under Sections 49(b) and 52(a) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, and 20 years in prison to 9 others who were charged under Sections 50(a) and 52(a).
Twenty locals, including NLD party executive committee member U Win Zaw Oo, were given long prison terms by the military council on September 30 at the Daungnay Prison Special Court, where they were being detained.
Locals and NLD party members were reportedly found in possession of two firearms, accused of collaborating with terrorist groups, and given lengthy prison terms.
Daw Aye Aye Aung, a member of the NLD Party of Sidoktaya Township, was sentenced to 20 years in prison under Sections 50(a) and 52(a) by the military council, and now she has been sentenced to another 20 years in prison under the same sections, bringing the total sentence to 40 years.
Since Myanmar’s military takeover, the military council has been suppressing the people tied to NLD members, and more than 15,000 people have been placed under arrest, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
