The KNU reported that five local people, including children, were injured when the regime troops, which came from Zarthaypin village towards Hpa-an in Karen State, opened fire with heavy and small weapons along the main road.
The soldiers on a military convoy returning to Hpa-an from Zarthapyin village opened fire with weapons for no reason near Kawpayan village in Donyin Town of KNU-controlled Hpa-an District at around 9:30 am on October 12.
The shell fired by regime forces exploded near the middle school in Kawpayan village, injuring a man and a child from Maukmauklar village, and a villager from Mukawar village.
Moreover, two adults and three children were wounded near Hpa-an-Zarthaypyin route in the shooting, while details of the incident are under investigation, the KNU said.
After the reckless attack, the police forces from Htoneaing police station came to check, and it is not yet known which battalion or division shot the civilians.
The Kawpayan village is situated beside the Mawlamyine – Hap-an road in Donyin Twonship of Hpa-an District. The KNU said that it was a peaceful village until shooting after the military coup.
