The junta-appointed Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein has put pressure on businessmen and companies to build Thingyan pavilions in order to attract large crowds at the upcoming Thingyan Festival in Mon State, the businessmen told Than Lwin Times.
At the coordination meeting on organizing the Maha Thingyan Festival at the state governmental office on March 28, the military council requested businessmen and companies to build water-throwing pandals for the Thingyan Festival.
Mon State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein asked to build pavilions with entertainment and dance troops along Mawlamyine Kanar road to preserve the Thingyan Festival, a traditional cultural heritage.
In addition, he also told the departmental personnel that they should participate in the successful celebration of the Thingyan Festival so that the people can enjoy the Water Festival with peace of mind along with the pavilions that serve food.
A businessman told Than Lwin Times that the junta-appointed Chief Minister urged allbusinessmen to participate in the event because he will try to celebrate Myanmar’s Thingyan festival with large crowds and show it to the world.
It is reported that in order to make the Thingyan Festival more crowded in Mon State, departmental pavilions must be built along the Kannar road, and private companies have also been forced to jointly build pavilions.
A businessman said that the military council asked business owners to build pavilions, but they said nothing about security matter and only directed them to build water-throwing pandals along the Kannar road.
In addition, there are also reports that they are planning to have a Thingyan walk in the sand field on Kannar road.
In Mon State, Thingyan festivals have not been held since 2020 due to the COVID epidemic, and after the military coup in 2021 and 2022, people did not celebrate Thingyan in protest against the coup.
Currently, the military council is attempting to make the Thingyan festival more crowded, but the revolutionary forces call for people not to participate in the Thingyan festivals to be held by the military council.
