Nearly 1,000 local residents have been forced to seek shelter as the fighting flares up in eastern Demoso in Kayah State, the aid workers told Than Lwin Times.
The majority of Karenni IDPS who have crossed the border are women, the elderly, and children who have fled to the eastern part of Demoso due to the military council’s deliberate offensive since early March.
Most of them are locals from the Dawmatagyi village tract, and they came to the Thai-Kayah border after a five-day walk.
The refugees have arrived at the border, where they can easily flee to Thailand, fearing airstrikes by the military council, said an aid worker.
The number of people escaping the battle is growing daily as a result of the continued violence in Kayah State, and more food, shelter, and medicine are required.
The military council has put stringent restrictions in place with the four-cut strategy so that individuals fleeing the conflict cannot access essential utilities.
After the military coup, about 80 percent of the local people have fled the conflict, which is equivalent to more than 250,000 of the 300,000 population of Kayah State.
