Nearly 800 people are fleeing to safety because the junta army, which has invaded Mone Township in the Kawthoolei area, is abducting them as human shields, reported the Karen National Union (KNU).
On May 16, the junta army entered the villages of Tamar Khaw and Taung Su (West) in KNU Brigade 3, Nyaunglaybin District, and took two civilians as human shields, according to the statement.
The KNU said that the regime forces took a 40-year-old man from Tamar Khaw village and another 70-year-old man from Taung Su (West) village as human shields and released them on May 17.
The local people were afraid and fled to safety as a result of the junta raids, and the number of people fleeing from two villages has now reached 790, the statement said.
After a confrontation between the regime troops and the combined forces of the KNLA in Mone Township, on May 10, the junta army massacred 20 locals, including four children and eleven women, and used seven others as human shields, said the KNU.
According to KNU’s Spokesperson Pado Saw Kale Sae, the military council’s human rights violations are getting worse in the Kawthoolei administrative area, with the majority of them occurring in Brigades 1, 3, 5, and 6.
More than 8,000 local citizens were forced to leave for safety on the 13th and 14th of May as fighting flared up between the junta army and the allied forces of KNLA Brigade 3 in Mone Township, with the IDPS going through a number of difficulties.
According to the Karen Emergency Rescue Committee in Mone Township, almost 16,000 locals have fled from 11 villages as regime troops have invaded Mone Township, and they require humanitarian assistance and social security.
