The military council, which has been detaining those who opposed the military regime and pro-democracy activists since the coup, is building a new prison in Mon State’s Mawlamyine, sources close to the matter told Than Lwin Times.
The new prison is being built in Minywa village, Mawlamyine, and the construction is reportedly now 80 percent complete.
The prison had been built following the military coup, and cars and motorbikes have been banned in its neighborhood, a local said.
The new prison under construction was inspected on June 23 by the military regime’s State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein and officials from the Prison Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
U Aung Kyi Thein said on his social media that the construction of a three-story central guard building, a two-story facility for prisoners, a dining hall, fencing, and staff housing had been finished.
In addition, he also urged the contractors to focus on the timely completion of the prison construction in accordance with the set standards.
Mon State has 11 prisons, including a central prison and detention facilities, with male and female political prisoners being held in Thaton prison and Kyaikmaraw central prison.
