Ten temporary relief camps have been set up for people affected by heavy rain-induced flooding in Mon State’s Belin Township, according to rescue teams.
The water level of Belin River exceeded 30 cm above its danger level on August 2 as a result of torrential rains, causing flooding in low-lying villages and certain neighborhoods in the township and submerging some villages.
The flash floods hit thousands of local residents in Belin’s villages of Kantharyar, Phoe Yarzar, Phoe Hla Gyi, Sayar San, Thabyay Ni, Ahlulay, Kyipin, Kyeinphan, Taung Zun, Shwe Hlay and Hnin Pale.
Nearly 500 people are taking shelter in ten flood rescue camps set up at schools and monasteries in five wards of Belin.
Flood victims received rice and food donations from social relief organizations and local communities, but the military council provided little assistance for them.
According to flood victims, the junta administration issued an order on August 4 to close the flood relief camps.
As of 3:00 p.m. on 3 August, the water level of the Belin River was still 26 cm above its danger level of 1,022 cm.
Mon State sees floods and landslides almost every year, and in 2019, nearly 70 people were killed in natural disasters.
