Leaders of the ethnic armed organizations participating in the Spring Revolution, are not interested in the military council’s political goals of peace, democracy and federalism, the officials told Than Lwin Times.
Major General Zaw Min Tun, the spokesperson of military council, stated at the 22nd press conference of the military council, which was held after being suspended for more than nine months, that they are moving towards their political goals of strengthening the multi-party democratic system and building a union based on democracy and federalism.
He also said that the door is always open to meet with the EAOs who want peace and wanted them to participate in the dialogue.
The KNU’s Central Working Committee member Padoh Saw Taw Nee said, “The peace and democracy that the military council claims are different from their actions, and the peace talks will no longer exist. The military has become an illegal organization and a terrorist organization because it has violated agreements and pacts. Furthermore, the military council talks about democracy and human rights, but in reality, human rights violations and war crimes are increasing on a daily basis”.
According to the military council, if the agreements of those taking part in the peace talks are gathered and prepared, it will be feasible to work rapidly to form a union based on democracy and federalism.
The Karenni Nationalities Progressive Party (KNPP) Secretary-2, U Aung San Myint, said, “Since the military’s democracy and federal system are based on the 2008 constitution, we cannot build a federal democratic union for the aspiration of equality and self-determination of the ethnic groups”.
After the army led by General Min Aung Hlaing seized power on the grounds of voter fraud, the newly established military council held 119 peace talks from March 2021 to July 27 this year.
Major General Zaw Min Tun reiterated at the press conference that certain requests can only be approved off in the Hluttaw, and if the Tatmadaw has agreed to those points through the current dialogue, there is no objection.
U Pe Than, a former Hluttaw representative who won the election in two democratic governments, also pointed out that the military is only organizing the ethnic groups on their side, and there is nothing ready about the federal government.
The military council is currently inviting ethnic armed organizations, according to the NCA, but said that they will only be able to discuss it to a certain point.
Ethnic armed organizations such as the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), the Karen National Union (KNU), the Chin National Front (CNF), and the Karenni Nationalities Progressive Party (KNPP) are waging war with the military regime.
Among them, NCA-signatories the Karen National Union (KNU) and the Chin National Front (CNF), walked away from the military council and round-table talks due to the military coup.
