Mawlamyine, 2 September

The Mon Unity Party (MUP) has applied to the military-backed Union Election Commission  for party registration, said sources close to the party.

The MUP re-registered under the name of Mon Progressive Party to run in the junta-planned general election in Karen State constituencies.

On 31 August, the UEC announced registration process of this party.

Mon political parties, the Mon Unity Party and the Women’s Party (Mon), have also applied to the junta’s UEC  to continue their parties.

The registration of the Women’s Party (Mon) has been approved for Union level, but the Mon Unity Party, which applied for its respective state, has yet to be granted the right to register.

After the military coup, the Mon Unity Party sent two party representatives, Dr. Banya Aung Moe and Nai la Yi Tama, to the military council.
