The policemen have extorted money while inspecting cars and motorcycles for security reasons in Mon State’s Mawlamyine, said locals.
The policemen patrol around the city day and night, checking the people to see if they are carrying weapons and ammunition.
The policemen are checking the driver’s license, motorcycle license, number plate, and car mirror, which are not related to security, without the presence of the traffic police, and threaten to extort money.
Residents said that the policemen are asking for 50,000 to 100,000 kyats from those who violate the rules and are acting rudely.
According to a resident, the policemen use sexually abusive words toward the women.
Than Lwin Times tried to reach Dr. Aung Myat Kyaw Sein, spokesperson of the Mon State Council, regarding the behavior of the policemen, but he did not respond.
On the other hand, the junta forces check the National Registration Cards at the entry and exit of the town and checkpoints and extort money, as well as asking for 1,000 to 5,000 Kyats per cargo truck.
Following the attack on the Southeastern Command in Mawlamyine, the military council increased security and conducted searches, as well as making threats and extortion, according to locals.
