Fighting has decreased by more than half in the townships and along the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC), where the Chinese projects are being implemented in Myanmar, reported ISP- Myanmar on June 30.
More than 2,240 conflicts occurred in 61 townships where projects between China and Myanmar are being implemented, as well as other scheduled projects, until May 31 from Feb 1,2021 when the military took power.
More than 1,480 of them occurred in the first 14 months from February 2021 to March 2022, while just 760 occurred in the second 14 months from April last year to May this year.
Comparing the two 14-month periods, the incidence of violence has dropped by nearly 50% in areas where Chinese projects are situated over a 14-month period, said ISP-Myanmar.
Over 1,000 of the more than 2,240 conflicts occurred in Karen State, where the China-Lao-Thai-Myanmar four-nation trade route passes, and at least 225 clashes also occurred in Loikaw, where the cross-border power lines would be installed.
Northern Shan State had at least 222 conflicts, while Muse Township, where the China-Myanmar border economic cooperation zone would be established, saw more than 80 skirmishes.
As of May 31, there had been more than 9,500 clashes across the country, with more than 23 percent of them occurring in 61 townships where Chinese projects are located.
According to ISP-Myanmar, there have been more than 1,290 clashes between the military regime and the ethnic armed groups, more than 300 clashes between the junta army and the People’s Defense Forces, more than 560 clashes between the EAOs-PDF joint forces and the junta army, and at least 46 clashes among the ethnic armed forces.
