Mawlamyine, May (15)

Colonel Saw Kyaw Nyunt, a spokesperson for the Peace Process Steering Committee (PPST), claimed that they will focus on seeking an inclusive platform during military leader Min Aung Hlaing’s peace talks with ethnic armed organizations.

General Zaw Min Htun, a spokesperson of the military council, said that 10 EAOs had registered to attend the peace talks.

However, the Lahu Democratic Union (LDU) officially announced on May 12 that it would not attend the junta’s peace talks.

A total of nine groups, six NCA-signatories and three NCA non-signatories, are expected to attend the talks.

The talks will focus on finding an inclusive platform to overcome the current political crisis, Colonel Saw Kyaw Nyunt, spokesman for the ceasefire group PPST, said.

“The meeting will focus on how to reach an inclusive platform for solving political issues through political dialogue in order to be a meaningful gathering that includes those who should be involved in,” he added.

The Arakan Liberation Party (ALP); New Mon State Party (NMSP); Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA); KNU / KNLA Peace Council; Pa-O National Liberation Organization (PNLO); Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS); United Wa State Army (UWSA); Mong La – National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA) and Shan State Progressive Party (SSPP/SSAA) have registered to attend the meeting.

However, the EAOs which frequently clashed with the military council: the Karen National Union (KNU); Kachin Independence Organization (KIO); Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP); Chin National Front (CNF) and All Burma Students’ Democratic Front have officially announced that they will not attend the peace talks.

The National Unity Government (NUG) and the Peoples’ Defense Forces (PDFs) were not invited to the discussion. Political analysts said there would be no progress because the peace talks were not inclusive.
