Mawlamyine, March (31)

The Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) says humanitarian aid is needed for internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing fighting between the KNLA and the military troops in Brigade 6 in Dooplaya District.

Fighting between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and junta troops has been going on in areas controlled by KNU Brigade 6 for the past few days.

Because of that battle, the IDPs from Phaluu, Wal Lay, Sukali, Asian Highway, Kawkareik and Kyondoe Townships are fleeing to safety places along the Thaung River on the Thai-Myanmar border.

Currently, because the number of refugees in the Brigade 6 area is increasing, humanitarian assistance is needed, Saw Nanda Su, a spokeswoman for the Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG), said.
“There are more refugees than ever before,” he said. As fighting intensifies in this area, there will be around 30,000 refugees. We also need medical assistance.”

More than 30,000 IDPs are said to be on the run due to the battles of KNU Brigade 6, according to the Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG).

Currently, clashes are taking place on a daily basis as the military council expands its military presence in the 6th Brigade and launches more offensives with heavy causalties on the junta’s side.
The KNU’s 6th Brigade has announced a temporary suspension of travel on the Asian Highway and the Myawaddy-Wal Lay road, and urged the public to cooperate because of the military offensives.
