Mawlamyine, April (18)
The military council released twenty prisoners from Myeik and Dawei prisons on April 17, the first day of the Myanmar New Year.
A total of 20 prisoners were released, with 12 from Myeik jail and eight from Dawei prison.
“Political prisoners were not among those released by the dictatorship, and only those imprisoned on other crimes were released. Deserters and drug offenders made up the majority of those freed.
Only a few of the detainees were released. Family members are anxiously awaiting the release of the detainees this morning. When a limited number of prisoners were released, they returned disappointed,” a local told The Than Lwin Times.
The military council released 1,577 international and Myanmar prisoners on Myanmar New Year’s Day.
