Taunggyi, March (29)
The Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) says it will work with like-minded forces to draft a constitution that would lead to a federal democratic union.
The Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), a powerful ethnic political party, held a two-day national conference in Taunggyi, Shan State, from May 26 to 27.
At the conference, a total of 117 members of the Central Committee were re-elected, including 31 members of the Central Executive Committee.
After the conference, the SNLD announced seven objectives, including plans for the future.
These include standing up for the truth in the current political climate; striving to overthrow the dictatorship; and working for inclusiveness for internal peace.
It will also work with like-minded allies to draft a constitution that would lead to a federal democratic union, Sai Kyaw Thu Lin, a spokesperson for SNLD told Than Lwin Times.
“The problem is that the current 2008 constitution is not a constitution aimed at a federal union. We cannot move forward with this law. Therefore, if we want to go to a federal system, we need to have a new federal constitution, which is the main foundation. For that, we have cooperated with like-minded parties and allies, and will be able to move forward if only by drafting an inclusive constitution,” he said.
In addition, The Committee for Shan State Unity (CSSU) is committed to implementing the Declaration of Peaceful Coexistence Policy.
The SNLD has been warned to suspend its political activities for three years for refusing to accept the party audit of the regime’s Union Election Commission (UEC), and the commission later postponed party audit until the end of June.
The SNLD has continued to adhere to its party principles in this regard, and currently, no decision has been made on the party’s audit Sai Kyaw Thu Lin said.
The SNLD announced that it does not accept military coup and that 42 of its elected representatives would continue to be recognized.
The Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) is the third largest elected party nationwide in the 2020 general election.
