Demawso, June (12)

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)’s humanitarian assistance has seldom reached the displaced people in desperate need, the refugee rescue workers said.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) released a statement on June 9 that emergency relief supplies were provided to refugees in Loikaw and Demawso Townships in Kayah State in May and early June.

UNHCR says it has provided emergency relief supplies to more than 50,000 refugees. However, UNHCR assistance has not yet reached those in need of emergency assistance in areas where fighting is going on, the rescue worker said.

Assistance from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) only reaches refugee camps near the city, not far from the city.

The refugee rescue workers called on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to work with them to provide assistance to IDPs in remote areas.

Fighting between the two sides has forced more than 200,000 people across Kayah State to flee, and they are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

At the ASEAN Humanitarian Crisis Meeting in Cambodia last month, the UNHCR opted to provide aid through the military council.

The National Unity Government (NUG) and three ethnic armed groups have expressed their opposition to the plan, claiming that the military council could exploit humanitarian supplies as a weapon.
