Yangon, July (28)
The seventy-two prisoners who were sentenced to death by the junta have the potential to be extrajudicially killed, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said on July 27.
In recent days, the political prisoners Ko Jimmy (Ko Kyaw Min Yu), Ko Phyo Zeyar Thaw, Ko Hla Myo Aung and Ko Aung Thura Zaw were extrajudicially executed and no clear messages were given about that, AAPP said in its statement.
According to the Myanmar Prison Act, paragraph 1027, the graves shall be marked with “the name of the deceased, his residence, and the date of his death” and the executed bodies must be buried, not cremated.
The military council’s failure to do this is an act of murder and disappearance, the AAPP said.
The AAPP claimed that the military council’s failure to act in accordance with the provisions of the law amounted to murder and disappearance.
The 74 prisoners who are still on death row for their roles in the spring revolution risk the prospect of receiving the same treatment.
According to AAPP, the death toll has reached 2,131 for the opposition to the military dictatorship in 542 days since the coup.
