Military coup claims over 7,000 civilian deaths

More than 7,000 civilians were killed in Myanmar since the military took power on February 1 of last year until September 20 of this year, according to a report released on October 6 by the Institute for Strategy and Policy – (ISP-Myanmar).

According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), there are at least 2,299 civilians who died from gunshots during the protests and in custody by the military council.

At least 1,317 civilians were killed in the post-coup and armed conflict, according to data compiled by ISP Myanmar.

On September 19, junta-controlled newspaper stated that 3,542 civilians were accused of being informants and killed, and this list has not been verified by independent organizations.

According to AAPP and data collected by ISP Myanmar, there were over 3,600 civilian deaths that were not included in the list released by the military council until September 20 of this year due to the military coup.

These figures show that the Sagaing Region had the most civilian fatalities—over 1,500—and the Magway Region had the second-most—nearly 380 civilian fatalities.

According to ISP Myanmar, on September 16, at least 13 civilians were killed in an airstrike by the Military Council in Latyatkone Village, Dibayin Township, Sagaing Region. Among the dead, there were seven children under the age of 18.

This data was compiled by ISP Myanmar from independent news media and organizations and AAPP, and the figure on the ground may be higher.
