Thaton, October (22)
A combined force of Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and allies attacked a joint-camp of military personnel and Border Guard Forces (BGF) stationed at Nyaungdone village in Hpa-an Township in KNU Brigade 1’s Thaton District.
The KNLA joint forces attacked the camp with drones as well as heavy weapons around 7 pm on October 20.
The two sides exchanged fire for almost 20 minutes.
Major Saw Kyaw Myint, chairman of the KNU’s Alliance Supervision Committee, told the Than Lwin Times that at least 5 soldiers might have been killed in the battle.
The military council and BGF joint force retaliated with heavy and small arms, but the KNLA joint force was able to successfully retreat without any loss, he said.
The Joint Military Council and BGF camp in Nyaungdone often arrest and threaten local residents, extorts money, and force villagers to collect wood and bamboo to build the camp.
Since October 14, fighting between the Military Council and the KNLA joint forces has been ongoing in Kyaikto Township, the area under the control of the KNU Brigade 1, forcing more than 8,000 local residents to flee.
