Mawlamyine, December (20)
The Mawlamyine-Yangon night train service has been temporarily cancelled due to security concerns along the route, the regime’s Myanmar Railway Department said.
Following the return of night train service on December 12, the regime’s Railway Department announced that the Mawlamyine-Yangon night train service has been temporarily cancelled starting December 18.
The cancellation of night trains came after the cargo train hit the landmine between Kaligyun and Tadar-U villages in Thaton around 7:30 pm on December 13.
As the Mawlamyine-Yangon night train service has been temporarily suspended, the officials said that they will refund pre-purchased upper and ordinary class tickets.
However, according to the authorities, daily up and down trips will operate, with a day train leaving at 9 am.
The X-Ray checkpoint near Nyaungkharshe village causes delays for people traveling from Mawlamyine to Yangon by road, so they opted for the train trip as an alternate route.
With the rise in the number of passengers traveling by train, railway police and staff are selling train tickets on the black market at triple the price.
A commander of the Karen National Union KNU Brigade 1 Thaton District said that they attacked the Mawlamyine-Yangon cargo train as it was carrying military personnel as well as weapons and ammunition.
