The chairman of junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party is appointed as the chief minister of Mon State as per Section 419 of 2008 State Constitution, according to the announcement of state-media on 1 February evening.
U Aung Kyi Thein will be substituted for his predecessor U Zaw Lin Tun. The former was the Minister for National Resources of Mon State under the junta administration. He contested No (2) state constituency of Chaungsone Township in 2020 General Election, but he lost to NLD candidate U Thet Tun.
On 1 February evening, a parliamentary candidate of USDP in Paung Township received 9 serious gunshot wounds.
