Yangon, February (18)
The National Unity Government (NUG) has asserted that it will shift from being defensive to offensive in counterattack on the military council that seized power in a coup, and that it will open six fronts from all corners, including those related to politics, the military, the economy, and international affairs, in order to end the revolution in 2023.
International recognition of the National Unity Government (NUG) as a legitimate government plays an important role in the Spring Revolution.
During the second week of February, the National Unity Government (NUG) actively engaged in diplomacy, according to the statements of the NUG’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The NUG was able to open a liaison office in Washington, D.C., and in recent days, NUG Foreign Minister, Daw Zin Mar Aung had meetings with the British Foreign Minister, and US Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman.
Currently, the National Unity Government (NUG) is one step ahead of the Military Council in diplomatic activities, but has not yet become an internationally recognized government.
“Whether or not the world community recognizes a country depends on their interests, and I believe that the NUG would be more successful if the United States and its allies explicitly recognized the NUG,” said veteran politician U Pe Than.
The National Unity Government (NUG) has currently opened representative offices in eight countries around the world and is addressing the difficulties and needs of the people of Myanmar, U Kyaw Zaw, spokesperson of the NUG presidential office, told Than Lwin Times in September last year.
The NUG have opened representative offices in the Czech Republic, England, Norway, France, South Korea, Japan, India, and Australia, and are cooperating with relevant countries.
Dr. Sai Kyi Zin Soe, a political analyst, remarked that the National Unity Government (NUG) has not yet been recognized as the official government of Myanmar, even though international communities have supported and assisted NUG in matters of democracy, adding, “We see that the countries are not supporting the NUG to the extent that they could. This can be seen if you compare it with the Ukraine incident.”
The United Nations Credentials Committee meeting held on December 12 last year decided to extend NUG ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun’s tenure as Myanmar’s permanent representative for one year.
On the other hand, Miliary Council’s representatives are not allowed to attend ASEAN summits, but Myanmar ambassadors have opportunities to attend ASEAN-related meetings.
According to the statements of the regime’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the relevant Myanmar ambassadors of some countries, including ASEAN, are participating in tours, meetings, and events these days.
