The junta regime announced on 3 May to reduce death penalty to life sentence for38 inmates in different prisoners across the country.


The reduction of punishment was made as per Article 204 (a) of the Constitution to mark the Buddha Day or Kason Full-moon Day. However, the junta did not publish the name of these 38 inmates.


The amnesty order was coincided with the visits of the Chinese foreign minister and Russia delegation to Nay Pyi Taw
The junta carried out death penalty to prominent politicians U Jimmy and U Phyo Zeya Thaw in July last year.


The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners reported that the junta regime has arrested 17,897 dissidents. Among them, 112 individuals were sentenced to death penalty.
