The number of displaced persons has reached over 20,000 in Kyaukkyi township as the military is randomly firing heavy weapons, making arbitrary arrest and stealing property of villagers almost every day. The area is included in a territory of Karen National Union’s Brigade (3) in Nyaunglaybin district.
This interview is with an official of Karen Emergency Relief and Rescue Committee (Kyaukkyi Township) about humanitarian assistance to IDPs and military operation of junta army.
TLT: Could you talk about human right violations of military regime in Kyaukkyi Township?
KERRC: Clashes occurred when the military conducted offensives to the villages. It does not matter about clashes among armed groups. But the military troops are randomly firing to the public, and making arrests. They also killed civilians. Human right violations have occurred more frequently in Kyaukkyi township and Nyaunglaybin district. They killed about 30 persons and hundreds of people were arrested. They brutally killed and burnt innocent people, including children. They randomly fire the villages without battles. They stole property of residents. Human right violations have increased here in this year.
TLT: How many IDPs are there in Kyaukkyi Township. What are their challenges and difficulties, and what kinds of humanitarian assistance are required for them?
KERRC: There are over 20,000 displaced persons in Kyaukkyi Township of Nyaunglaybin district. We are providing humanitarian assistance as possible as we could, at least basic supplies of medicines, foods and clothes. It is not enough for them. Healthcare, education, living and security are at the top of priority for people.
IDPs have no access to sufficient medical care. Travel restriction is seriously imposed. Elder persons and children suffer serious impacts from the lack of healthcare system.
TLT: What is the condition of military’s operations in Kyaukkyi Township?
KERRC: Armed conflicts are breaking out almost every day, with random firing. The military is firing heavy weapon shells. At present, they (soldiers) are conducting offensives in Mone area, and carrying out attacks in Shwekyin township, and along the roadsides in Kyaukkyi township.
TLT: Could you talk about your demands to international organizations?
KERRC: We have reported US agencies on human right violations of the military.
TLT: What are the future works of Karen Emergency Relief and Rescue Committee (Kyaukkyi Township)?
KERRC: Our committee is providing possible assistance in living, education and healthcare sector of our people. We will fulfill supplies as much as we can.
