Nearly 4,000 civilians have been killed in Myanmar in the two years since the military coup, including more than 90 NLD party members, reported the National League for Democracy (NLD) on June 13.
The NLD party made the announcement citing the data collected by the National League for Democracy’s Human Rights Violation Record Group until the end of May this year.
Following the landslide victory of the NLD party led by public leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in the 2020 election, junta leader Min Aung Hlaing seized power over voter fraud.
When the coup took place on February 1, 2021, the military council arrested and detained ministers, state and regional chief ministers, NLD party members, elected representatives, and the leadership of the civilian government elected by the people.
According to the NLD, the military council violently cracked down on the people’s peaceful demonstration against the coup, arrested the protesters, tortured and killed them in interrogation centers, burned villages and homes, and looted people’s property.
More than 13,500 people were illegally detained by the military council, while over 4,300 were released.
According to NLD figures, 1,200 members of the NLD, including 77 parliamentarians, are among the more than 9,200 people incarcerated.
More than 620 people had their residences and assets taken, including 171 members of parliament and 333 members of the NLD party.
In addition, there were 154 raids and destruction of party headquarters and branch offices by the military council, and as well as more than 1,200 incidents of looting, burning, and destruction of civilian homes, and more than 53,000 houses and buildings were damaged.
According to NLD records, more than 390 civilians were killed and 154 seriously injured in 86 airstrikes conducted by the military council in Kachin, Kayah, Karen and Chin state, and Sagaing and Magway regions, the strongholds of anti-regime resistance.
The NLD Central Working Committee has urged the international community, including ASEAN, to effectively carry out the process of taking action against the military council that committed crimes in accordance with international laws.
