Hundreds of passenger vehicles are stuck on the Myeik-Palaw road in Pala Town in Tanintharyi Region’s Palaw Township as regime troops have launched artillery shells and closed the checkpoint, locals and resistance forces told Than Lwin Times.
Since 9:00 a.m. on June 16, Infantry Battalion 285 based in Palaw and junta troops in Pala police station have been firing a barrage of artillery shells towards Pawutgon and Kade villages when there is no fighting.
In addition, the Pala checkpoint has banned passenger vehicles and trucks from continuing their journey.
When there was no combat, artillery shelling and roadblocks indicated that the military council intended to cover up their military convoy among the passenger vehicles, said the source from Myeik Battalion 1.
A driver said that until 4:00 p.m., vehicles were not allowed to continue their journey amid heavy gunfire by the regime forces.
The Pala checkpoint has barred vehicles from running between Myeik and Yangon.
There are frequent battles between regime troops and revolutionary forces on the Myeik-Yangon route in Pala Township, and passengers, including drivers, are injured or killed.
In the more than two years since the military coup, there have been at least 100 skirmishes between the junta army and the revolutionary forces in Palaw Township, where martial law has been placed.
