Fighting has forced the residents to flee from more than 40 villages in Kyaukkyi Township in the controlled area of KNU Brigade 3-Nyaunglaybin District, according to KNU’s statement released on July 29.
Clashes broke out between the junta army and the armed wings of KNLA Battalion 9 near Kayonkon and Yedwinkon villages since July 25.
During the fighting, residents of 41 villages, including Innpari, Kyonkon, Yedwinkon, Kankalay, Warche, Painzaloat, Ywarma, and Paukko, were forced to flee their homes due to the military council’s artillery shelling.
According to KNU, only 8,000 people from 1,655 homes in ten villages could be identified, while the rest are being undertaken.
The two-day fighting from July 25 to 26 killed 16 regime troops and injured over 30 others, and the resistance forces confiscated seven rifles and some ammunition, according to KNU.
The junta troops beat and punched a local man from Yedwinkon village. The KNLA troops found him while clearing the area, and he is now receiving medical treatment.
On July 19, the junta army brutally burned a 45-year-old man to death when they entered Namza village, according to the KNU statement.
