Another landslide on Myawaddy-Kawkayeik Asian Highway, Thai-Myanmar trade route, damaged some portions of the road, causing commodity prices to soar, according to traders and locals.
Heavy rain triggered inundation in the Myaynigon neighborhood of Myawaddy, Karen State, on August 7, and another landslide occurred on the Kawkayeik-Myawaddy Asian Road around 12:40 p.m., following the heavy rain.
The Kawkayeik-Myawaddy road section near Taw Naw Waterfall collapsed due to severe rain, cutting down traffic.
The reports of the collapse of the Myawaddy-Kawkayeik Asian Highway caused an immediate surge in commodity prices, and the price of goods jumped by 10 to 20 percent.
A bottle of three-viss Thai-made shrimp oil jumped in price from 22,000 kyats to 25,000 kyats, while a dried noodle jumped from 17,000 kyats to more than 20,000 kyats per package.
The officials arrived to inspect the damaged part of the Kawkayeik-Myawaddy Asian Highway, but repairs could take a long time due to the severity of the damage.
Thailand and Myanmar trade via the Myawaddy-Kawkayeik Asian Highway, with yearly bilateral trade valued in the billions of dollars.
